About Me - Andy Bagley

My Background

I've been a consultant now for well over 25 years. My career began in central government where I worked first in management, than as an internal consultant, and finally as leader of a consultancy team in what was then the Benefits Agency (now part of DWP).

I left in 1997 to set up on my own, and in 1999 became a director and co-owner of TEAL Consulting Ltd. Here I gained experience both of company management and of working with a broad range of public service clients. These included central and local government, housing associations, police, the health sector, social care, education, third sector organisations and some private companies running public service contracts. I still have links with TEAL as well as working for myself.

In 2008 I once again became independent, and Real-Improvement is my own brand. The change was partly about work-life balance, but it also gives me the chance to work in my own right in areas that really interest me. These include helping charities and community organisations, particularly in Leeds and Yorkshire, where I live.

Over the years I've directly supported more than 90 client organisations and managed projects for many more. I've also designed and delivered well over 200 training workshops both for individual clients and for wider networks. I'm the author of training case studies and other published articles (not to mention my blog!), and have developed collaborative partnerships with universities and professional institutes as well as other consultancy organisations. All of this means I can offer clients a wide range of improvement and evaluation tools - certainly not a 'one-size-fits-all'.

When not working I enjoy walking, cycling, chess, watching American Football, and most of all spending time with my family.

How I Work

When I take on client work, I'm not looking simply to tick a list off a list of requirements. I always ask how I can add real value, by giving the client a deeper understanding of how their organisation works and how they can achieve real improvement. I'm a true believer in the value of diversity, not just in people but in organisations as well. So every client is unique and every solution should be unique too.

I believe the secret lies in understanding the way that individuals and organisations work. Then, using performance management and measurement methods in a way that suits each particular situation, we can influence behaviours, create positive change and achieve real success.
